new or rebuild?

not sure if this is the correct forum,so shoot me if you have to,or move it.
either or.
I had an leaky engine run out of oil and start knocking under load. Once oil was in it the knock went away and ran fine except for a bit of blue smoke.
It only ran for a few miles with the knock.

Will the block be toast now?
It was on the list to fully rebuild already, bore, cut crank, new rods, pistons etc..
I've never tried to redo an engine that ran out of oil,so i don't know what the block will be like.
I'd rather not drop it at a machine shop and have them charge me $$$ for a toasted block if it's NFG.

And no it's not my car. I religiously check my oil every now and then.

thanks

As long as none of the noises was a: "BANG" you most likely caused no damage to the block. Probably wiped the bearings though.

Ran without oil oops! I remember my high school physics teacher lamenting about his wife taking his RX7 out when he was mid oil change. Accidents happen.

I'm with E & R. If it's running quiet it couldn't have done too much damage. Depending on how long it ran, lack of oil could cause damage to bearings, journals, cam lobes / lifters, valve guides, valve seals, rings, and bores. All those should be addressed during a rebuild anyway.
