Steel rack
Hi all-
I finally got aggravated enough by stepping over and around steel laying on the floor.
I decided to build a steel rack, here is the start of it.
It is 18 feet long, 20 feet tall. Has 8 shelves.
Here is a picture.

86cj7boy- Apple strikes again! The new OS changed the picture format from a .jpg to a .hirc. I am trying to figure this out. Sorry about that.

Good work. I struggle with material storage right now. Everything is on one rack and I have to dig through the pile whenever I need something. It works for now, but it's something that needs to change soon.
Do you work with round stock often? Any concerns with it rolling off of the racks?

We are thinking on mitering the I beams on the shelf for the pipe. We are thinking about adding a 5 degree slope to the shelf. This way the pipe rolls back to the posts.
Hope that makes sense ??

If you want to pile tubing up, you may want more than 5 degrees. We did 15 degrees on our steel rack. Sometime tubes on top will still push the very bottom tube uphill. You could always ad a small foot to the end of the i beam or even better make a removable stake.

Do the removable pin in the end (even a welded on stop) you'll be glad at some point that you did!
It is really loud . . . when a near 20' long piece of tube gets pushed off the end of the tube/shelf. . .
Really loud!!!

We were looking at the rack today. If I cut the last 4 arms off—to 36 inches, then I can use the very top position in the rack. I have bundles of metal decking that I use for dumpster gates.
I did find a problem with my design. My arms are 5 foot long and the forklift forks are 4 foot. I can’t get the stuff in the back. Oops.
Time for longer forks!
I think we are going to do a removable pin for the pipe rack.

damn that thing is huge! 20' tall wow. i would like to redo my tube rack so it doesn't take up any floor space. i like that but i think i would use the bottom 6' or so to store stuff.
