Recently I needed a quick solution for welding closed, through holes, in a "C" channel frame. My thought to make a Copper Backer that I could hold over the backside of the hole and plug-weld. I realized that I could have less invested by just buying the Harbor Freight copper spoon. Except that I failed to find it at the local store.
Soooo, I did a little more searching, and I found
Vim Tools and their "MPWT" aka:
Magnetic Plug Weld Tool. This tool is designed with sheet-metal being the application but $30-US I'll take it.
It turned out to be a much higher quality tool then I expected! I did choose to spray a heavy coating of WELCO 1620 anti spatter on the copper backing pad.
I pulled the trigger on the Miller and welded the hole shut.
I let the MPWT cool by sticking it to the frame for a couple moments. I sprayed the pad and did the next one, when I had them all welded on one side I went back and welded the inside. All and all, I would say that even with allowing the tool to cool off every couple welds I still saved time!
