What I am learning

For the last few days I've been helping in a friends oilfield company's shop. He does hot taps. He has branched out a bit and is fabricating and installing support structures for "Tees" in pipelines. He has been teaching me his process to form the "T" in pipe. Basically cut pipe in 1/2 lengthwise, cut oval in center, heat red hot and press a form thru. I'm doing stuff that is new to me and am very interested in.

So what have you been doing in your shop that's new and still interesting?

I've used manual machinery for years but have recently dived into cnc. I bought a cnc lathe a couple of weeks ago and have been learning how to use it. I've already been through this process with a VMC but it's still a bit different. With the mill it's a constantly evolving process of how do I do this, how do I do this better, how do I do this faster, etc. It's definitely kept me interested.

That would interest me too. A couple years ago I bought a used Kennedy tool box for $100. The owner said I could have all the tools that were in it. It was his machinist tools from when he started out 30 years ago. He never followed thru with the trade. His son wasn't interested. I got about $3,000 worth of tools with the box. One day I will afford a milling machine or lathe and put these tools to work.
