Difference between ERW and RHS

Hi guys,

Well I am new in this so sorry if this is a dumb question.

Me and my friends are looking forward to build an ST4 (we have already purchased the plans), my friends are Mechanical Engeniers, I do not know a lot I just have experience in racing karts and a bit of open wheel formula race cars.

But I am the one with more free time and the most enthusiastic about our projetc, so I am kind of doing the pricing analisis for the steel required for building the chasis (frame).

The issue I been facing is that people on the steel shops arownd the area do not know about ERW, and they are telling me they only have RHS this for the square tube and for the DOM tube they are telling me that they just have pipe or tube.

So what this people is telling me is that RHS is the same thing as ERW.

How can I diferenciate those materials? I been reading about this and I know that ERW is the way the tube is fabricated, but is there a difference to the RHS.

What I do not want is to compromise the design and saftey of our car because we use different material than the specified one.

Depending where you come from Id guess is what tube may be called...

RHS would refer to 'Rectangular Hollow Steel' and ERW being a prosses 'Electric Resistance Welded' .. Saying just ERW usually will pretain to Cold Roll over Hot Roll and is a stronger process persay....

I could go on but on the fly..... hope that helps a bit for now...

Google search basically agrees with Dog, Rectangular Hollow Sections. So they are telling you the mechanical name for the tube since there are so many shapes, then you need to specify HREW, CREW, DOM, Seamless, and the list goes on actually. You should be able to specify each manufacturing type for standard sizes of rect. square, round tube, pipe, and a few other hollow structural shapes.
