what would it take

I have a ex-buddy who continually drives shit-faced(not "had a few") and he will kill someone someday.he's a ex-buddy because i won't allow him anywhere around my house because i don't trust him to not run over my kids, dog or wife.

Question is,do i call the cops on him or not?

I've always been the live and let live type of guy,but where do you draw the line?
So what would it take for you to call the cops on a buddy?

I'd do it, cuz if you don't, and he kills someone, you'll regret not calling. and you shouldn't have to live with regretting that.

Unfortunately, if he's completely unwilling to change, I have to agree with Chocflip201. You should call the police. They can't just charge him based on your word, but if you tip them off when he's driving drunk next, they can pull him over and catch him in the act. And if you're this concerned about it, I'm certain it would eat at you if he ever did cause someone harm.

I agree with the others above. Call the cops on him. It will be cheaper for him to deal with drunk drivng tickets than vehicular manslaughter. Heck doubtful but if the cops near you are cool they might help to try to scare him off the bottle with out so much trouble. But the threat of trouble.

And as mentioned your conscience will be better off all round.

Red face

It all depends just where you live. Where I live the police would treat a call or even visit in person as a nuisance .

I tried this with 2 different people at different times I was lucky nothing ever happened.I don`t even bother any more.

So far that a report may not even be filed.

Now this happened less then 10 years ago perhaps things have changed.

Not much you can do unless your in his presence then either take him home or take his keys

Well....not long ago I was that person... 6 months clean/sober now.

Maybe consider looking up a Saturday night open AA speaker meeting in your area. Ask him to go with you....no....tell him what time you'll pick him up. It will let him know that you give a s*** as a friend but won't tolerate him, or anyone, endangering other peoples' lives.
If he persists which, statistically, he probably will....call the cops.

All the best.

I have had a similar issue, friend that continually drives drunk and wont stop. I told her I was going to call the cops and give them the description of her car and tell them that if they pulled her over in the evening that they would likely catch her drunk driving. I did call the cops but from then on out she would take a cab instead of drive herself. The threat of getting a DUI (here in Cali the first can cost $25000) was enough that she thought better of drinking and driving. She's still and alcoholic but at least she's mostly off the road. Of course this was 10 years ago and I haven't seen her in about 7 years but at the time it did some good.

Try talking to him first. If he is still not ready to change then I think that it would be better to call the cops.
