Dana rear Super 70

I have a choice of rear axles a friend of mine is going to let me have. Both are D70s.
One has 70 su and the other 70 1su casted into the housing. It's the 1su that I find interesting. What i've found out is that the 70 1su is the Super 70. Really can not find too much info on it. It's supposed to be a beefed up 70.
Anybody have any insight in this model 70 as far as after market stuff and would it be more favorable in my Bronco Trail truck then the su model. And yes it does see some hard trails.
Any help would be appreciated. One other thing, Dana lists it for the E450 only.



The one on the plywood is the su, the 70 1su is laying on the ground.





Pros/cons on the Super?

I have had problems with mine in my dodge. Soft casting ended up breaking the ring gear. Replacement parts were a PITA to get as the ring gear is larger from the super to standard model.

Thanks for your reply. Since I posted this I went over to friends backyard and removed both tags on diff cover...too rusted to read. Took them home, cleaned up and here are the results.



B0M of the casting D SU
605300 1 = 70/267 1987-88 E350 DRW 70 U

BOM of the casting D 1SU (The one I thought was a "Super 70")
605253 1 = 70/267 1985-86 E350 Chassis 70 U
The number one following the 6 digits means Standard (Open I assume) 3:54
So even though the casting says D 1SU it is still a 70 U series.
Plus this one has both hubs where the other is missing a hub.
Both have 3:54 gears as per tag ID

May need a different carrier for some deeper gears.

So the one that I thought was a Super is in fact the U series which have a good following of parts including after market ones.
I think the numeral 1 in front of the SU was just an indication of an Open rear that they used from 85 to 86.
Plus all Super models came with 4:10 or 4:56 only from what I get from Dana Spicer PDF
